Meet the cast of Beauty and The Beast

Every week leading up to our school production of Beauty and the Beast, we’d like to introduce you to some of our cast members who will be taking to the stage. First up in the interview chair is Year 13 student Alfie who is taking on the role of the larger than life (and a barge) Gaston.

Tell us a bit about your acting experience.

I started drama at Upstage Academy in Ripon when I was 8, having just gone along to give it a try. I was always quite quiet and wanted something to help my confidence. I’ve been in Grease, Hairspray, The Wiz, Into The Woods and High School Musical with them, mostly in Harrogate Theatre.

We hear you are also an award winner?

I enter the Harrogate, Skipton and Wharfedale Festivals most years and was the Harrogate Speech and Drama champion in 2019 and 2022. I was also nominated to take part in the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire competition by the Wharfedale Festival which I won too.

Why did you audition for the role of Gaston?

He’s such a great character and I love playing the antagonist. It means I can be as mean as I want without being told off!

What’s your favourite number in the show?

Definitely the song ‘Me’. I get to show off and it’s really funny!

What are your plans after A Level?

I’m applying to study drama at LAMDA, RADA, Rose Bruford, Guildhall and Italia Conti but the competition is really tough. I’ll start the audition process in December which is really nerve-wracking!

What are the standard of school productions like in comparison to outside school?

Incredible! The standard is always so impressive and it’s great to see the younger students coming through. We never do anything by halves and I love the anticipation leading up the show. My favourite part is the 5 minutes before I walk on.

Why should people come and support?

If Gaston were answering…. “Me of course!"
