Specialist Status...

St John Fisher Catholic High School was the first school in North Yorkshire to be designated Arts College Status.  This was the result of a community inspired effort undertaken with the financial backing of over 400 individual sponsors.  The first stage of this project was to build a new Music suite, the Keelan Centre, which provides the following facilities for our students and the community at large:

Pupils

  • A large music room to facilitate ensemble practices
  • A music ICT suite
  • A digital recording studio
  • Individual practice rooms
  • A video editing suite
  • A gallery for exhibitions of student Art

We have also developed and refurbished a modern 100 seater Auditorium/dance/drama studio suitable for smaller productions, complementing the facilities provided by the Hall for major works.

In addition to the three Art rooms we now have a series of small studios dedicated to Sixth Form Art Students use.  A computer graphics area has also been created as part of the Arts suite.

As a newly designated Humanities College, the school is committed to the development of new programmes in Geography, History, Classics and Religious Education, making particular use of ICT in these areas. All classrooms now have IWBs and speakers, new courses have been introduced at GCSE and ‘A’ Level and many outside speakers have been invited in.

Not only does the School benefit from the specialist status, but so do our family of Primary Schools and the community at large, as all facilities and additional resources are made available to them.  This exciting initiative extends the participation in the Arts and Humanities and continues to enhance the self-esteem and confidence of our pupils.  The Arts nourish the spirit and enable students to express feeling, ideas and beliefs and foster skills such as team building and problem-solving, which are valuable to young people whatever their career routes.  The Humanities increase students’ sense of identity and awareness of the world around them, while also developing their decision-making and ‘judgement reaching’ skills.
