Pastoral Care

The school places a high value on the pastoral care and welfare of pupils. An extensive team, comprising of the Head of Pastoral Care, Head of Year, Form Tutors, Attainment Co-ordinator, Learning Support Mentor, Social Worker, Lay Chaplain and Welfare Officer, provide support and guidance for pupils. Social and Personal Development issues are presented to pupils through a range of programmes and activities. Opportunities for pupils to discuss their progress and targets, receive guidance on how to achieve potential and contribute to school and wider community are integral elements of pastoral care at this school.

Conduct
The highest expectation is placed on all pupils to create a safe and secure learning environment by behaving in a manner which reflects and supports the school’s ethos and does not disrupt the learning of others. The school has a Code of Conduct based on mutual respect, concern for others and care of the school fabric. This code is contained in the student planner, and actively discussed during form time. Pupils’ achievements and standard of behaviour are recorded and monitored. The Positive Behaviour System reinforces the code through rewards and sanctions.

Spiritual Life

Following the liturgical calendar and based on the teachings of the Catholic Church, the school promotes spirituality through worship and prayer centred around the celebration of the Mass.  We have our own lay School Chaplain, who, through liturgy, integrates spirituality into the whole life of the school.  Each year group has a day retreat and Year 10 pupils participate in the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes.  In addition, Year 11 and Year 12 students have the opportunity to participate in a residential retreat.

Sex And Relationships Education

Sex education at St John Fisher is firmly rooted in the Catholic ethos of the school, structured by Church teaching and having due regard for diocesan and Dfes guidance.  Pupils are taught about the sacred nature of marriage and its centrality to family life and encouraged to develop positive values and a Christian moral framework that will guide decisions, judgements and behaviour.

Although parents retain the statutory right to withdraw their child from the Sex and Relationships Education, the school expects that families who seek admission are fully aware of the aim to implement the teachings of the Catholic Church in this area.
